Welcome to

A Matter Of Music

A place for artists and industry professionals to find the ideas, tools, and education needed to master the business of music.

Simon Tam of The Slants

Author, Musician, Activist, and Troublemaker

"Tam is best known as the founder and bassist of The Slants, the world’s first and only all-Asian American dance rock band. He helped expand civil liberties for minorities by winning a unanimous victory at the Supreme Court of the United States for a landmark case, Matal v. Tam, in 2017. He also leads The Slants Foundation, a nonprofit that supports arts and activism projects for underrepresented communities."

We talk to Simon about his approach to marketing, the case that took him all the way to the Supreme Court, how the Notorious RBG (Ruth Bader Ginsberg) made him feel like his voice was finally being heard, and the fact that artists must know the business as well as the creative side of the music industry.
